How We Score Crypto Exchanges: Our Methodology
CryptoScorerโs mission is to make exchange rankings transparent and reproducible. This article explains the CryptoScore framework, the data we use, and how we turn raw metrics into a single score.
The CryptoScore Formula (Weights)
Each exchange is scored across eight categories with fixed weights. We normalize component scores to a 0โ100 scale, apply the weights, and sum the result.
| Category | Weight | What It Measures |
|---|---|---|
| Security & Reserves | 30% | PoR status, reserve coverage, security history, custody signals |
| Fees | 18% | Spot and futures fees, discount programs, fee competitiveness |
| Liquidity | 15% | Order book depth, execution quality, market stability |
| Regulation | 12% | Licenses, jurisdictional compliance, regulatory standing |
| UX & Support | 8% | App ratings, support channels, usability signals |
| Health | 7% | Platform stability, operational indicators, resilience |
| Accessibility | 5% | Regional availability, KYC flexibility |
| Editorial | 5% | Qualitative assessment of trust, product quality, consistency |
How We Build Each Category Score
Security & Reserves
We evaluate proof-of-reserves reporting, reserve coverage, and security history. Exchanges that publish frequent PoR reports with independent verification score higher than those with self-published snapshots or no PoR at all. We also factor in public security incidents and whether an exchange maintains insurance or safety funds.
Fees
We use real spot and futures fee schedules from our dataset (maker and taker). Exchanges with consistently low spot fees or strong discount programs (BNB, OKB, KCS, BGB, GT, MX, CRO) score higher. We also consider the spread between maker and taker fees โ tighter spreads are generally more trader-friendly.
Liquidity
Liquidity scores reflect market depth and execution quality across major pairs. Higher liquidity means tighter spreads and less slippage, which can matter more than raw trading fees for active traders.
Regulation
We track licensing and jurisdictional approvals (such as US MSB registrations, FCA registrations in the UK, or regional approvals in the EU, Singapore, or Dubai). Exchanges with broader regulatory coverage score higher than those with limited or unclear licensing.
Accessibility
Accessibility measures how many countries an exchange serves and how strict its KYC requirements are. Exchanges with wider regional access and some no-KYC or low-KYC pathways score higher than platforms requiring full verification for all activity.
UX & Support
We incorporate app store ratings, support channels (chat, email, ticket systems), and usability signals. A strong UX can reduce errors and help users get support when it matters.
Health
Health reflects operational stability and resilience. We consider factors such as platform reliability, historical incidents, and overall operational maturity.
Editorial
Editorial scoring provides a qualitative review of product quality, transparency, and overall trust. This category is intentionally small (5%) to ensure the data remains the primary driver of rankings.
Grades and Badges
CryptoScore produces an overall grade as well as badges when certain thresholds are met. Grades range from S (95+), A (85โ94.9), B (75โ84.9), C(65โ74.9), D (50โ64.9), and F (below 50). Badges highlight strengths such as โVerified Reserves,โ โRegulated,โ โTop Rated,โ โLow Fees,โ and โHigh Liquidity.โ
Why We Publish the Methodology
Scoring should be auditable. By publishing the model, we give users the ability to understand what the score reflects and how to interpret it based on their priorities. If you care more about regulation than fees, you can weigh the score accordingly. If you care about low fees or derivatives liquidity, the components help you compare exchanges at a glance.
